Estimating the square footage of a cedar home.
One of the first steps, before you order your products, or call a professional wood refinishing contractor for an estimate is to determine how many square feet of wood siding you have to restore and protect.
The formula to determine the surface area of a wall is Length X Height = Surface Area
Estimating the total surface area of your home is easy. First, begin at any corner and measure the total distance around your foundation. Next measure the height of the wall that is covered by cedar siding. Multiply the first number by the second and you have the total square feet of cedar siding.
An example would be:
2,100 square foot single story ranch home. There are two walls that are 35 feet long and two walls that are 60 feet long. The total distance around the house is 190 feet. With an eight foot ceiling height inside, there is eight foot of cedar siding on the outside, plus a one foot band board overlapping the foundation for a total of nine (9) feet of height*.
*If you intend to treat wood clad sofit or facia, be sure to calculate the additional square footage.
(L) 190' X (H) 9' = 1,710 square feet.
1,700 would be a very safe number to use when estimating material usage. You would certainly have material left over for touch up and maintenance. If you want to tighten your estimate, you can calculate the surface area of window and door openings and deduct that from your total. So for example if there are a total of 200 square feet of openings, that leaves 1,500 square feet of cedar siding to restore and protect.
Once you know your total square footage, determining material usage is easy.
Divide the Total square footage by the "coverage" or "spread rate" of the product.
(Step 1) EFC-38 treats 150 square feet per gallon. (750 sq feet per 2LB Jar)
(Step 2) Citralic treats 150 square feet per gallon. (750 sq feet per 2LB Jar)
1500 square feet divided by 150 is 10 gallons for each Step 1 and Step 2
So you would order:
2 - 2LB jars of EFC-38 Wood Cleaner/Stripper
2 - 2LB jars of Citralic Wood Brightener/Neutralizer
Woodrich-Brand Timber Oil covers 150 - 200 sq feet per gallon.
1,500 square feet divided by 200 is 7.5 Gallons and by 150 its 10 Gallons.
So you would order:
8 to 10 gallons of Timber-Oil depending on the age and condition of your wood.
